RE-cycle with your bicycle

We are delighted to share a blog written by student Melis Asiyo from Hisar School, who is part of a team delivering a Global Goals project for the 2019-20 Global Goals Competition.

Their project is among over 957 social action projects currently running as part of the GSL movement and we are excited to be supporting them to design and lead positive social change in their community.

Eye opening to the problems that our country and world, face.

Project Overview

RE-cycle is a project that aims to increase the use of clean energy while also educating the public about climate change and environmental issues. Our group was keen on creating a project that would educate the public on these topics while also getting them actively involved in the solution. As a group we are aware that our country (Turkey) hasn’t taken many steps on preventing climate change and global warming. As the younger generation we are worried for our future, we have taken it up on ourselves to be the ones to speak up and take action against these environmental problems.

RE-cycle is an initiative that proposes to place bikes that generate clean energy through out the cities gyms, parks and calisthenics parks. The bicycle will remain stationary as individuals ride it, the kinetic energy that is produced will be stored in a compartment that is connected to the bike. Once the storage for the energy is filled it can be taken out and used to power street lights, houses, schools and so on. We also plan on putting a board next to the bicycle, the board would have information on what the bicycle does, tips & tricks on how to become more eco-friendly and environmental issues.

Our Journey

GSL has opened our eyes to the key issues that our world is facing today, it has encouraged our team to research several topics and further our knowledge on them. Generally, the experience so far has led to us becoming more self aware about our country and our world. Our skills on research and filtering that research has developed immensely since the start of our project since it has required us to do so. We have each discovered a passion for design thinking, while also constructing and developing an idea.

The project and product that we have set out to create requires many skills to achieve. These skills varying from coding, mechanics, marketing and researching. Our team is experienced in the fields of business, marketing and media however to accomplish what we envision requires us to broaden that set of skills and evolve.

The Next Chapter

In the following weeks we plan on taking our vision and bringing it to life. There are some obstacles in our path that we can foresee and we are working on overcoming them. We are working hard on building a firm basis for the project to we can excel with ease and make the process go as smoothly as possible. Although we are still in the middle of developing our product GSL has opened our eyes in many ways. We believe that the competition mission and vision is one to learn from. The platform itself encourages our generation to widen our view of the world, analyze problems and create solutions. It is a competition with many beneficial factors and we plan on sharing it with our community.

The 2019-20 GSL Global Goals Competition is now open and runs until June 2020. If you belong to one of the 700+ teams of students currently delivering a social action project as part of the competition we would love to hear from you and feature your blog and project photos on our website to inspire others.
