We are delighted to share a blog written by student Ethan, from Queen’s College, who is part of team Waste Less Feel Better delivering a Global Goals project for the 2021-22 GSL Global Goals Competition.
Their project is among over 957 social action projects currently running as part of the GSL movement and we are excited to be supporting them to design and lead positive social change in their community!
Waste Less Feed Better
Project Summary
Hi everyone!
My name is Ethan, and I am 12 years old. I selected Goal 2: Zero Hunger among all the other 17 Sustainable Development Goals as my Sustainable Development Goal.
The goal of my project is to encourage all children in Hong Kong to pay attention to the impact of food waste on the planet. I hope to raise awareness of environmental protection through education for the new generation, and adopt:
1. Promote Hong Kong schools/communities to pay attention to food waste management issues.
2. Encourage individuals to change their living habits to reduce leftovers.
3. Encourage recycling of unavoidable food waste at the household level.
4. To promote supermarkets/merchants to donate surplus food to charities.
The Journey
I have written a blog post and video script on food wasting tips and tricks. I have surveyed strangers to get better understanding on their general ideas and thoughts on food waste.
I hope to strengthen the school’s commitment to sustainable development, implement various environmental protection strategies on campus, actively organize relationships with other schools/groups, conduct mutual learning and exchanges, and work together to improve students’ environmental management.
All of the above are what I am doing and hope to do in the future. So I think the biggest challenge is to introduce my project to other schools and get their approval. At the same time, I hope that after the epidemic is over, I can carry out more offline activities.
The Next Chapter
Tackling food waste is a really important goal to work towards. Many people in our society live in food poverty, yet simultaneously we are throwing away mountains of food every single day. We need to change our behaviours to resolve this issue, and educating people about the issue and ways they can change is absolutely at the heart of that.
