GSL Little Heroes

We are delighted to share a blog written by student Yara, from Modern Montessori School, delivering a Global Goals project for the 2020-21 GSL Global Goals Competition.

Their project is among over 957 social action projects currently running as part of the GSL movement and we are excited to be supporting them to design and lead positive social change in their community.

our dreams are big and our ambitions are bigger, trust us, we have a lot yet to come

Project Summary

It all started on September 22, 2020 when we were invited to an AHA meeting (Amin Hasan Award – Middle School activities Department), they introduced the GSL Competition, we immediately knew we want to be part of the change and make a difference! We thought that together we will be a great team. We made a group, we shared our thoughts, ideas and beliefs, can’t forget the enthusiasm we had then when we all decided to join in without thinking of it twice.

The 1st phase was to brainstorm and collect ideas; to have more information about it, we researched other GSL projects; we had long discussions with our families and friends, we did our best to be a different and unique team, a team that can make a difference and take a major role in their community. After long talks, negotiations, generating ideas, we finally decided to collect paper, plastic caps and aluminium cans. We started searching for companies that recycle different objects. We found around 10 companies and managed to contact them but, unfortunately, they didn’t allow us to work with them because of our young age, but still, we never gave up, and tried until we found 2 companies. We had some interviews with them, and now working together, we are overjoyed and proud that we are working with such big, important and amazing companies and indeed people.

Our Journey

In our humble opinion, we gained and developed many skills; being more interactive, sociable and confident, as we are working and interacting with companies and people of our parents age that we don’t know; sending e-mails to experienced and professional managers and employees – we even send emails to England! To people who have already built a great career and have a big influence around the world. We developed our researching skills; we researched A LOT and were inspired by many people from different countries. Moreover, we now think positively more than ever, we look at the bright side of any obstacle, embrace our small achievement with love and appreciation. We do not give up easily – we found out that being patient is a virtue, this has all paved our way to being successful. We believed in our capabilities and talents, believed in ourselves and, although we are only 6 graders, we can do a lot. We learnt that age doesn’t matter and what actually makes a difference is the determination and hard work .

Yet, we had two big challenges; firstly, not everyone accepted us, at the beginning we were a bit shy and felt uncomfortable. Secondly, we were not taken seriously when working with the companies, sending e-mails, but thankfully, now everything is much better, and things are changing.

Our Next Chapter

Yes, we do recommend to other people our age to be engaged and involved in similar projects. We need to consider the benefits of other countries and places, to stop being selfish and think that the world only revolves around us. We need to unite and give a hand where it’s needed, every person can make a difference, regardless of their age! Do remember that this earth gives but never takes. Thus, don’t ever think of it in the way of, “what will I get in return?”, because everything good you do will have at least 1 benefit. You may not notice it immediately, but at the end you and everybody elsewhere will notice it as well. Furthermore, if you listen to our advice, and participate in the GSL, do believe that your involvement and interaction is already a win! Work hard and be positive.

The 2020-21 GSL Global Goals Competition is now open and runs until June 2021. If you belong to one of the 500+ teams of students currently delivering a social action project as part of the competition we would love to hear from you and feature your blog and project photos on our website to inspire others.
