Prestigious Year 7 to 10 leadership development Summer Programme & Oxford experience

Invitation to Year 7 to 10 students

Due to the success of the GSL summer programmes in 2018, 2019 and 2021, and recent interest in our summer programme consultation, Townley Grammar School are delighted to invite our Year 7 to 10 students to take part in a new leadership and sustainable development summer programme hosted at TGS and including an excursion to Oxford.   

To register for this programme and secure a place, parents need to complete two steps:

  1. Submit a registration form (to join waiting list)
  2. Pay course fees

There are limited places and we will allocate places in order of registration (‘registration’ form submitted online). Please complete Step 1 before paying your course fees.

Students eligible for Pupil Premium should email Mr De Fabiani if the cost of this programme is a barrier to participation (please complete your registration form).

Please note, due to the popularity of this programme we have in previous years closed registration prior to the deadline once we have reached capacity.

This programme is designed in partnership with Townley Grammar School and is only open to Townley Grammar students to attend (who are currently in Year 7 to 10).  We are inviting students in Year 11 to 13 to apply to become Peer-Mentors for this programme and take part in our global virtual GSL Accelerator.

INTRODUCTION TO THE TOWNLEY GSL SUMMER PROGRAMME

Townley Global Social Leaders (GSL) Summer Programme is a unique 5-day intensive social leadership course, designed to develop your leadership skills and your understanding of global issues enabling you to be a leader in your life and society.  The programme is being hosted by TGS and will act as a good foundation for the new TGS baccalaureate which is launching in September.

Townley GSL Summer Programme is being developed and delivered by the Global Social Leaders team at Future Foundations in partnership with Townley Grammar School and The Wellington Leadership and Coaching Institute.

GSL programmes are designed using the principles of research-backed learning frameworks like Project-Based Learning, Design Thinking, and International Baccalaureate’s (IB) Service in Action.   They are designed to bring together young people who are driven to make social change; to help them understand the global context of causes they care about by learning about the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and to help them deepen their understanding of their local community and how they can take action on the issues affecting their local community.

The Townley GSL Summer Programme is an introductory programme that will help each participant understand themselves better and learn how to show leadership for oneself, in school, and in the community. Participants will develop their understanding of the global challenges we face and how, through partnership and innovation, we can solve them. The week will be a fun opportunity to work with others from TGS to come up with creative solutions themselves to local issues.

Alongside the leadership course, the students will take part in a one-day excursion to Oxford on the middle day of the programme.  The excursion to Oxford will inspire the students to dream about their futures and the place they want to take in the world.

AFTER THE PROGRAMME

Further opportunities for students to develop their social leadership skills

Global Social Leaders have other courses which students can take part in online with young people from around the world.  These combine live online sessions with coaches with self-paced activities that support young people to deliver their own social action project over a period of four months.

Townley Grammar School are also a GSL Member School.  As part of this membership up to 100 students each year are supported to deliver social action projects which can then be entered into the GSL Global Goals Competition.   Your child can speak to *** if they would like to get involved in this.

Excursion to Oxford

Townley students will participate in a day-trip to Oxford on Wednesday xx August (Day 3 of the programme). This will be a truly inspiring experience and will provide the students with an inspiring and immersive experience.  

Oxford, a city in central southern England, revolves around its prestigious university, established in the 12th century. The architecture of its 38 colleges in the city’s medieval center led poet Matthew Arnold to nickname it the ‘City of Dreaming Spires’. University College and Magdalen College are off the High Street, which runs from Carfax Tower (with city views) to the Botanic Garden on the River Cherwell.

We are planning a tour of the city and a visit to a College. We are planning a full itinerary for the day with various partners in Oxford, and will be sharing a full excursion breakdown when we offer the places.

The students will leave Oxford inspired, to return to school to truly live the values of Global Social Leaders, to be leaders in their lives, TGS and society.
