Prestigious Year 7 and 8 leadership development residential programme at Queen’s College

Invitation to year 7 & 8 students

Townley Grammar School are delighted to invite our Year 7 and 8 students to take part in a prestigious leadership and sustainable development residential programme (Saturday 7th – Tuesday 10th July 2018) hosted by Queen’s College, Taunton including an excursion to the Eden Project.  

To register for this programme and secure a place, parents need to complete two steps:

  1. Submit a registration and consent form
  2. Pay deposit (£200)

There are limited places and we will allocate places in order of registration (consent form submitted online) and payment received. Students eligible for Pupil Premium should email Mrs Pandya if the cost of this programme is a barrier to participation.

Registration closes on Friday 25th May 2018

INTRODUCTION TO THE LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME

Global Social Leaders (GSL) Catalyst is a unique 3-day intensive leadership course, designed to develop your leadership skills and your understanding of global issues enabling you to be a leader in your life and society.  In July 2018 Townley Grammar School and Future Foundations are running a GSL Catalyst programme hosted at Queen’s College, Taunton for students in Year 7 and 8 attending Townley Grammar School.

GSL Catalyst is a transformational leadership experience and sustainable development programme developed by Future Foundations and the Wellington Leadership Institute that brings together young people who are driven to make social change on a global scale.  It is the introductory programme to our longer globally mixed programmes.

The programme develops each participant’s personal understanding of different leadership styles, and how to show leadership for oneself, in school, and in the community.

Participants will develop their understanding of the global challenges we face and how, through partnership and innovation, we can solve them. They will be taken through real life cases to demonstrate good project management and how to create their own impactful projects to take on after the programme ends.

Alongside the leadership course, the students will also have the opportunity to take part in a one-day excursion to the Eden Project.

Townley Students will:

At GSL we get to meet lifelong friends. Everyone is like minded so it is a very safe environment to be open and truly be yourself.

I learnt to be authentic. Be true to yourself and your values and that young individuals can make a difference.

I feel equipped with the tools I need to deliver a social action project.

AFTER THE PROGRAMME

STUDENTS ARE INVITED TO ENTER A GLOBAL COMPETITION

After the programme, Townley students will be challenged to start their own social action projects working in teams of 3 to 7 students which will make tangible changes within school and the community (local, national or global).

They will be invited to enter the GSL Global Sustainable Development Goal competition.

Excursion to the eden project

Townley students will participate in a day-trip and escorted tour of the Eden Project.  This will be a truly inspiring experience and will bring our students back to nature, and remind us all about the importance of protecting our environment to create a sustainable future.

Dubbed the Eighth Wonder of the World by some, the Eden Project is a dramatic global garden housed in tropical biomes that nestle in a crater the size of 30 football pitches.

With a worldwide reputation, and recognised by the British Travel Awards as the Best UK Leisure Attraction 5 years running (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015), Eden barely needs an introduction. More than just a huge, tropical garden, Eden is a gateway into the relationships between plants and people, and a fascinating insight into the story of mankind’s dependence on plant life. Not only a mind-blowing visitor attraction, Eden is also fast-becoming a unique resource for education and knowledge towards a sustainable future.

Experience the sights, smells and scale of the rainforests in the Rainforest Biome – the world’s largest greenhouse – and discover the tropical plants that are used to produce everyday products.

Students will amble amongst the orange and lemon trees, olive groves and gnarled vines of the Mediterranean Biome, and in the 30-acre Outdoor Garden see hemp, sunflowers and other plants that could change the future, flourishing under the Cornish sun.

Queen’s College is a co-educational independent school located in Taunton, the county town of Somerset, England. It is a day/boarding school for children aged 0–18.

Queen’s College was established in 1843. The building is a symmetrical Tudor Gothic building and set in approximately 35 acres (140,000 m2) of grounds. It was built by Giles and Gane in 1874 and has been designated as a Grade II* listed building. It first began admitting girls during the 1970s and is now fully coeducational.

The College’s motto is “non scholae sed vitae discimus” (“We educate not just for school but for life”).

GSL Hoodie

You can pre-order and pay for a GSL Hoodie for £20 (price on programme is £30). In order to benefit from this offer your payment must be received by 28th June 2018. We already know the size of your daughter as it was collected during parental consent.

Students will be given a GSL t-shirt which is included in the course fees.

Alternatively, students can buy a GSL Hoodie onsite at Queen’s College for £30 (cash only and limited stock).
