Dubairism

We are delighted to share a blog written by student Rodha, from ATHS AJMAN, Applied Technology High School, who is part of a team delivering a Global Goals project for the 2021-22 GSL Global Goals Competition.

Their project is among over 957 social action projects currently running as part of the GSL movement and we are excited to be supporting them to design and lead positive social change in their community!

We enjoyed working on our app and are grateful for our teachers for their assistance during the development process of the app.

Project Summary

People enjoy going out and visit new locations, yet many of them have no idea where to go, and some might be very picky as to where they want to go. Knowing that Dubai is one of the world’s most unique cities, and the perfect tourist destination with its stunning shining skyscrapers, state-of-the-art structures, magnificent beaches and sand dunes, fine cuisine, fabulous all-inclusive accommodation options, shopping at Dubai Mall, and adrenaline-filled adventures, we have decided to create an app that is only available in Dubai.

Therefore, our project’s aim is to make it much easier for people to get out and about in Dubai without getting lost, and to learn about new areas. It will display customers a variety of ideal locations that meet their preferences, such as restaurants, amusement parks, malls, and so on, as well as whether or not the location is crowded. Another feature we offer is that there would be information about the location a person selects to visit, allowing visitors to learn about the history of the location. Our project is related to decent work and economic growth because it will assist travellers in discovering great sites in Dubai, which will bring many more foreign visitors to our country.

The Journey

Throughout the development of our project, we had numerous challenges that we overcame within the last two months. For starters, Dubai has a lot of places to visit, possibly over 500, which is a lot of data for our app to handle, so we had to pick and choose until we came up with 100 different locations in Dubai, which was difficult since there are so many great locations to visit, but we chose the best restaurants, malls, and amusement parks. We’ve worked so hard this term and we’ve achieved the outcome we wanted. Here you can see that we added Ai features in the app which are a chatbox where people would communicate with one another to ask for their experiences and a directions option so we can make it easier for our users to find the location.

Next we added more areas which was a problem we faced last term where we couldn’t add more than 10 areas however now we have about 35 areas in the app.

Our app is published now in Google Play which is only available for android devices.

We also added a rating scheme so people would know the best places in Dubai to visit.

Finally we took photos by ourselves of different locations since there weren’t many pictures in the internet we had to go to the specific location to take the pictures.

The Next Chapter

We plan to add a few more features to our app by the end of term three. First of all we would ask users what they want us to add so we would know from their perspective what is missing, the things that’s in our mind is fully planning the user trip, for example if they book for an amusement park we would have the amount of games they’re going to play ready etc, we will also add multi languages like Arabic and Spanish, we’ll add more vouchers and hopefully more restaurants and outdoor places.
