We are delighted to share a blog written by student Maadhavan, from The Doon School, who are part of a team delivering a Global Goals project for the 2021-22 GSL Global Goals Competition.
Their project is among over 957 social action projects currently running as part of the GSL movement and we are excited to be supporting them to design and lead positive social change in their community!
It was extremely satisfying
Project Summary
We created solar-powered lamps out of waste plastic bottles in an effort to be sustainable. However, we also realised that the problem was for those several million Indians who were living without electricity and whom we wanted to help. So, we decided to build our lamps in a way that required very little capital. This allowed us to distribute several thousand lamps for free in slums. We were able to win the sustainability award in ReCharge with our idea and reach the semi-final stage.
The Journey
While participating in the competition I was able to learn a lot about how to manage a team, how to ideate and how to come up with ideas that make a difference. I also through this discovered my true interest in physics and I hope to pursue it further. While the whole process was certainly tiring I absolutely loved it and had a lot of fun doing it.
The Next Chapter
I am going to pursue Recharge further, as I truly believe in our mission and what we stand for. I also hope to encourage some more of my peers to follow this path and take action, because at the end of the day we are the future and so it is our responsibility to protect it as well.
