Project Summary
We have completed the initial stages of our project during the last couple of months and selected the lessons to be conducted. The team members are currently practicing lessons with the guidance of the language teachers. The awareness testimonials about the project have been done and publishing through social media to get the consent from the students who are preferred to take part in it. The lesson conducting program will be started during the month of March, after collect an adequate number of appliances. Currently we are working on collecting electronic devices and the books for distribute to the students who are in need with them.
We are planning to get testimonials from the students who are willing to join for the online English sessions. By assessing their videos, we can measure their progress of the language usage at the end of the program. As well as, we hope to encourage the students to send some written appraisals to check in which extent they are improved after participating for the online sessions. We hope to motivate the students who will be receiving the electronic devices and the stationary to give some written feedbacks.
The Journey
We, Challenge Changers are working as a group to accomplish a common goal and it is the main benefit that we could gain for ourselves. We worked hard with a good time management and learned lots of new thing such as lesson preparing, online lesson conducting, sharing… etc.
Specific objectives include providing more opportunities for the students in the rural area. During the lessons, learners will be improving their knowledge and approach towards learning, thereby valuing quality education for all.
Sri Lanka had to face the Covid-19 pandemic during last couple of years. Because of the Covid-19 outbreak, there was a huge drop down in the education system of the whole country. Students in some parts of Sri Lanka could not access to the education due to various reasons such as lack of electronic devices to join for the lessons, internet connection issues, lack of education platforms to join for the students from rural areas and lack of family income during the pandemic to be used for the education of the students. As well as the parents faced hardships in buying stationaries such as books, pens, pencils etc.
During the program implementation, we have faced several difficulties and the main challenge was that it was hard to get consent from the students who want to join for the online lessons because everyone from rural areas is not using social media much more. By the way we started to contact such students and schools physically via the previously known contacts. Since the schools were physically closed during the year 2021, it was little bit difficult to collect devices to distribute among the students who are living in rural areas.
The Next Chapter
Our ultimate vision is accomplishing the 4th Sustainable Development Goal of the United Nations. As an Asian country, most of the students are not aware about the online learning system. As well as the students in rural areas need to improve their English proficiency. Therefore, we initiated the first step to improve the English knowledge of the students in the rural areas and the non-governmental organizations and the schools in urban areas can develop this project by adding more new programmes. Since we are trying to implement an English teaching programme, other interested parties can start the programmes by targeting the job market.
