Project Description:
Mossphere by Neerja Modi School is an innovative environmental initiative deploying solar-powered moss biofilter units in Jaipur’s most pollution-exposed public spaces. Designed to reduce PM2.5 and PM10 pollution while lowering local temperatures, the project demonstrates how low-cost, community-maintained, nature-based solutions can improve urban air quality. Unlike mature trees, which can take years to provide shade, Mossphere units can be installed within hours. The team conducted more than 10 community workshops to identify and discuss optimal installation sites such as school gates, vendor clusters and lanes with no tree cover. Now, a cohort of student green monitors track sensors and maintain units, with around 80% of users reporting reduced environmental stress and the initiative already impacting over 1,500 people. The team is aiming for Mossphere to create a scalable model for cleaner cities.
