Recycling to Educate

We are delighted to share a blog written by Eva Viviana Rodriguez Dueñas, a student at Urbana 54 Jose Maria Luis Mora in Mexico, who is part of a team delivering a Global Goals project for the 2018-19 Global Goals Competition.

Their project ‘Recycling to Educate’ is among over 620 social action projects currently running as part of the GSL movement and we are excited to be supporting them to design and lead positive social change in their community.

I have noticed that in our community, city and state rubbish doesn’t get separated and people don’t recycle. Our teachers have explained to us how the mixed rubbish goes to landfills and stays there for hundreds of years.

I found out that plastic does NOT DISAPPEAR for more than 400 years.
We started to think that we should start doing something to change this. And we had to start with our school if we want a better and cleaner future. Later, we found that if we separate and take it to recycling places, we can get money in change. We thought it is a good idea to do something helpful with that money.

I remembered that some of my classmates are not so lucky as many of us. They live in an girls orphan away form their families for many different sad reasons. They are looked after by nuns and all the money they have for food, clothing, education, etc. comes from charity.

Then we ALL knew how was going to be the best way to spend the money we can get from recycling. Yes, getting food and things the girls need in the orphan.

So far we have got recycled plastic sacs from a plastic factory that they usually just throw away. We also got carton boxes. Our team and other friends labeled the bags and boxes: metal, paper, plastic. And we will place them everywhere around our school.

Sometimes as a child we think we won’t be heard. But our teachers have taught us the power we have inspiring adults. As soon as we started with our project our friends and other teachers who where not involved at the beginning have been very interested in the project.

We were so lucky to have Ms. Prince to tell us about this opportunity. I am so happy to be part of this project and to take action making a change for our planet. The future is ours and if we don’t start now our planet will get sicker and sicker until there is nothing to do. I will advice all kids not to be shy to speak out. Our age is a number and we can’t imagine the power we have to impact others.

I am excited to the better future we are starting to build now while helping others!

The 2018-19 GSL Global Goals Competition is now open and runs until June 2019. If you belong to one of the 700+ teams of students currently delivering a social action project as part of the competition we would love to hear from you and feature your blog and project photos on our website to inspire others.
