Raising awareness about three species of dolphins in Istanbul Strait and learning the effects of climate change and water pollution on life below water

We are delighted to share a blog written by student Lal Pamir from Aci Schools, who is part of a team delivering a Global Goals project for the 2019-20 Global Goals Competition.

Their project is among over 957 social action projects currently running as part of the GSL movement and we are excited to be supporting them to design and lead positive social change in their community.

we enjoyed our journey of teaching three species of dolphins in Bosphorus (Istanbul Strait) and learning of the effects of climate change and water pollution on them.

Project Overview

Hello, we are Seaviors from Istanbul, Turkey. The sustainable development goals we chose are Life Below Water, Clean Water and Sanitation and Climate Action. In our project, we want to affect and warn people about water pollution and how water pollution has an effect on the sea creatures. We wanted people to notice the dolphins that live in the Bosphorus and how water pollution affects them. So we made a plan about how to and when to take action.

Our Journey

In our journey, first, we researched the types of dolphins and their abilities. Secondly, we prepared questions for the pre-test and looked for their answers.

After that, we distributed the responsibilities and applied the survey. Then we started to work on planning the presentations. Dr. Akgün İlhan, Sinan Yirmibeşoğlu, and Zeynep Gülenç (academics, researchers, scientists) visited our school to talk about the life below water goals, climate change and Antarctica, water issues in Istanbul and dolphins.

Also, a group of 6th-grade students from Zekeriyaköy Middle School (invited by us) came to watch the presentations. After the presentation, we started to analyze the results of our survey to find out how much the students know.

The Next Chapter

Because of the COVID-19, we couldn’t achieve some of the actions we scheduled but we’d like to talk about what we are planning on when quarantine is over. First, we will go to seaside cleaning with 5th-grade students. We will also design t-shirts to wear while cleaning the seaside. After cleaning the seaside, we will go to observe the dolphins who live in the Bosphorus with the group of 6th-grade students who are from Zekeriyaköy Middle School. Next year we want to take more actions for our project to raise awareness. We really hope everyone is safe and healthy through this tough time.

The 2019-20 GSL Global Goals Competition is now open and runs until June 2020. If you belong to one of the 700+ teams of students currently delivering a social action project as part of the competition we would love to hear from you and feature your blog and project photos on our website to inspire others.
