We are delighted to share a blog written by Donor Shell, a student at BVM International School in India, who is part of a team delivering a Global Goals project for the 2018-19 Global Goals Competition.
Their project ‘Joy Of Giving’ is among over 620 social action projects currently running as part of the GSL movement and we are excited to be supporting them to design and lead positive social change in their community.

Eradicating poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice and the key to unlocking an enormous human potential. Still, nearly half of the world’s population lives in poverty, and lack of food and clean water is killing thousands every single day of the year. Together, we can feed the hungry, wipe out disease and give everyone in the world a chance to prosper and live a productive and rich life.
10.7% of the people in the world suffer from malnourishment. In India, this figure has reached to 14.8%. Our goal was to do our bit to reduce this figure. Every Thursday, we put up a shelf in the front of our school. Students, teachers and others from outside can bring food and other things, such as clothes and books. Once every month, we go to orphanages and slum areas to donate all of these goods to them. Also, we have done campaign work during festival season to raise awareness about our project and the shelf we have put up.
We got involved in this project because bringing joy to the lives of needy and underprivileged people appealed to us. We get a certain sense of satisfaction knowing that someone, somewhere is benefitting because we have worked hard in Donor Shell.
The only challenge we have faced is time. We wish we could have more time to raise awareness about our campaign to serve the needy. This project has helped us to learn that there are many, many people who are in need of basic necessities and education not by choice, but due to lack of resources and money.
We have also planned to educate government school children. we have requested the concerned authorities for educating them and waiting for their response. Yes definitely we will recommend this kind of projects to our friends and family.
It has helped us judge our life with based on what we have, not what we don’t have and what we want. Our goal is to continue helping the underprivileged even after this project never ends.
The 2018-19 GSL Global Goals Competition is now open and runs until June 2019.
