Programme

Global Social Leaders (GSL) Catalyst is a unique 3-day intensive leadership course, designed to develop your leadership skills and your understanding of global issues enabling you to plan a project and become a leader in your life and society. GSL is a transformational leadership experience developed by Future Foundations and the Wellington Leadership Institute that brings together young people from across the world who are driven to make social change on a global scale. In December 2017 we are running a GSL Catalyst programme to be hosted at Wellington College International, Shanghai for students aged from 12 (Year 8) to 15 (Year 10).

Programme dates:

  • Saturday 16th December – International Arrivals
  • Sunday 17th and Monday 18th December – Cultural Excursion
  • Tuesday 19th to Thursday 21st December  – GSL Catalyst Course
  • Friday 22nd December  – International Departures

The ultimate goals of the programme are to:

  • Develop leadership skills
  • Nurture confidence
  • Empower the participants to go on to lead successful projects at their own school

The programme will aim to develop each participant’s personal understanding of different leadership styles, and how to show leadership for oneself, in school, and in the community.

Participants will develop their understanding of the global challenges we face and how, through partnership and innovation, we can solve them. They will be taken through real life cases to demonstrate good project management and how to create their own impactful projects to take on after the programme ends.

After the programme, the participants will be challenged to start their own projects which will make tangible changes within their school and the community (local, national or global).

Alongside the student programme, teachers from each school will attend the sessions/activities so that they can support the participants on their return to school with their projects.

Excursion

Our cultural excursion is uniquely delivered in partnership with Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) to give participants and teachers a deep insight into Chinese culture and history. You will experience everything Shanghai has to offer.

In 2016, this included the following elements:

  • Local Students

    Meeting with local students to make (and eat) Chinese dumplings

  • Local Guides

    Bi-lingual local guides from SJTU

  • Martial Arts

    Participants and teachers learned set moves and then worked up to a team display

  • Writing

    Chinese typography writing class

  • Culture

    Participants learned about Chinese culture whilst working in pairs with students attending Paddington School, Shanghai

  • Food

    Eating Chinese foods

  • The Bund

    A visit to The Bund, the waterfront in central Shanghai

  • Shopping

    Free time to visit shops and buy souvenirs

  • Transport

    Shuttle transport between accommodation and the key sites

For 2017, the excursion will be two full days on Sunday 17th and Monday 18th December 2017.  Participants are therefore expected to arrive on Saturday 16th December to ensure they are rested and ready to fully participate in this important element of the programme.

SJTU is among China’s leading institutions of higher learning. It’s known for its pioneering research and development of cultural exchange programmes.  Future Foundations and SJTU are working closely in partnership to build upon our 2016 programme and create a 2-day experience, every participant and teacher will remember.

INTRODUCING OUR PARTNER

We are excited to share our accommodation partner is the Holiday Inn Shanghai Pudong Kangqiao.  Due to their support of this programme, they are pleased to be able to offer our participants heavily discounted accommodation rates.

This hotel is strategically located at the center of Pudong, and is located close to the international airport and to Wellington College International Shanghai.

Please allow £60 per night per student (for a superior twin room) and £100 for a private superior king room (single supplement).  This includes breakfast, dinner and an allowance for private transfers from the hotel to our excursion and course.

Having both Guo Feng, the famous authentic Cantonese Restaurant and a Western Buffet restaurant means that all tastes can be catered for.

NOTES & EXCLUSIONS
  1. Prices shown exclude accommodation and shuttle costs.  We have secured discounted rates with high quality hotel partner.  Further details are outlined in the accommodation section above.
  2. After 25th June 2017, prices will increase to the Normal Price of £1100 per head for Participants and £600 per head for Teachers.
  3. We may close applications at any time including if the course is full.  We therefore advise on applying and booking your place(s) as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
  4. Participants and Teachers will be responsible for booking and arranging their flight/transportation to Shanghai
  5. Participants and Teachers will be responsible for applying and paying for appropriate visas.  We will provide individual invitation letters to all Participants and Teachers.

* If booking 5-9 Participant places, 1 Teacher place will be provided free of charge.  If booking 10 or more Participant places, 2 Teacher places will be provided free of charge.  Accommodation, VISA and flights will remain the responsibility of the school.
