All For One…!

We are delighted to share a blog written by Shermila Sanjeewani, a GSL Advisor at Lyceum International School – Anuradhapura who is supporting a team of students delivering a Global Goals project for the 2018-19 Global Goals Competition.

Their project is among over 800 social action projects currently running as part of the GSL movement and we are excited to be supporting them to design and lead positive social change in their community.

It’s Wonderful Experience Which Helps us to Identify Our Own Strength, Towards Making a Change in the Society.

Project Overview

A big thank you to Global Social Leaders for giving us the opportunity to have this wonderful experience which is really interesting & challenging. It made us recognize the strengths & power hidden in our souls. Above all, the team spirit & working towards a target that will help to make a change in the society.

Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka is a rural area which is situated far away from the capital city (Colombo) of the country. As country is still in a developing state, facilitaties are not equally divided among people. People live in urban areas such as Colombo have access to modern technologies & latest facilities but the others who live far away from the commercial capital of the country don’t get such opportunities.

Specially the people who have not enough financial strength. We have recognized a rural school with very low facilities at Katukeliyawa village in Anuradhapura district. The student population of this school is around 280. They are lacking even the basic facilities such as sanitary, food, good clothing and clean water. More than 75 of the school don’t get enough nutrition food regularly. Their English language skills are very low and most of them are not socialized enough.

As our themes are health & well being & equality education, we have planned to provide them with a wash room complex with water and also to conduct some workshops to improve their English language skills. In addition to that we are going to distribute nutritious food, stationery & clothing. In order to enhance their public speaking skills & presentation skills we hope to give them a training based on effective communication and Speech and Drama. In addition to that we are going to introduce the 5s system to the school.

Our Journey

As humans we always should be a helping hand to the others who are in need. Not only to human beings but also to animals and to the entire environment.

So, I highly recommend everyone to join and work out these type of movements,
So that we can make this world more beautiful and also to make it a better place for us all to live in peace and harmony.

A simple act of ours can make a big change. A simple act would make a big change in the lives of thousands of fellow beings. So, let’s line up. Let’s make a change. Let’s make the world a better place. Let’s contribute to make a better tomorrow.

The Next Chapter

Main challenge we had to face was making the people’s attitude correct & raising funds for the project. In order to correct the attitudes of the people, we had to educate them and make them realize the importance of charity.

Even raising funds was very challenging. Rather than walking for just help always we always tried to give the society a service so that we could charge for that service so that we can raise funds for our project. Students of our school organized interval food stoles & they prepared book marks to be sold in the school premises to raise funds.

In addition to that several workshops to enhance their English language skills, Food distribution programs & donation for the school library have been organized by the students.

The 2018-19 GSL Global Goals Competition is now open and runs until June 2019. If you belong to one of the 700+ teams of students currently delivering a social action project as part of the competition we would love to hear from you and feature your blog and project photos on our website to inspire others.
